5-bromo-2-iodopyrimidine is a pyrimidine-based building block. Ring heteroatoms redistribute electron density, dipole and hydrogen-bonding capacity relative to an all-carbon analogue – which is the reason a heterocyclic core gets chosen where a carbocycle would be geometrically equivalent but electronically wrong.

What the substitution pattern does
